Two Friends: Book 1
Mr. Mouse lived in a little mouse hole in a house. It took some thinking but Mr. Mouse found out that the best place to make his mouse hole was under the grand piano. Mr. Mouse was a shy mouse. He never really went out of his hole unless he was getting food. One day Mr. Mouse was on his little mouse porch ( which wasn’t really a porch because it was inside his mouse hole) reading a book called The legend of the Swiss cheese mice. When he got up to fix dinner he smelled something unusual. The people in the house had never had a cat and they never let their food go bad. But Mr. Mouse was far to shy to go out of his mouse hole to figure out what it was.
While Mr. Mouse was eating a cheddar square, He smelled the smell again, it was a peculiar smell it smelled like an unfamiliar human. “Tomorrow I will go outside and find out what that smell is”. Said Mr. Mouse bravely. That night Mr. Mouse dreamt that he went out of his mouse hole and there was a cat ( not that this house had a cat ) and He fought the cat so hard it decided to retreat to its food dish. It was a wonderful dream, in fact so wonderful that Mr. Mouse felt even more courageous that morning than the night before.
Since Mr. Mouse always kept his promises, finally at 10:00 that morning after breakfast He set off to find out what that smell was. Thankfully, the smell was still there. So Mr. Mouse could follow the scent with his nose and he went scurrying off in the trail of the scent.
Since Mr. Mouse was following his nose not his eyes he was bumping into things so it took him one minute to travel a yard. But luckily all the humans were out of the house except one. Mr. Mouse stopped, his nose stopped, he was at the smell. He let out a squeak of triumph. But when he looked up he did not see what he was expecting. It was a human. Mr. Mouse was very frightened, to frightened to run. So he just sat and stared. The human looked at him. Mr. Mouse looked at the human.
After a long time of staring at each other the unfamiliar human bent down and laid his hand on the floor in front of Mr. Mouse. Mr. Mouse was confused, he did not know what he should do. He touched the hand with his paw. It was warm, he stepped on the hand, then he started to roll around, It was very comfortable. But just then Mr. Mouse started to regret his choice because the hand started to go up. Before he knew it Mr. Mouse was up high right in front of the humans face with the strange smell all around him. But soon he got used to the smell and was just afraid of the human.
“Hello my name is Daisy” The human said. By these words all of Mr. Mouse’s fear had gone and had been replaced with delight. “ I am Mr. Mouse” Mr. Mouse replied. The human named Daisy gave a short gasping noise. “ What was that for?” Mr. Mouse said “You can talk!” “Yes all mice can talk but its a secret so don’t tell anybody”. “Okay I won’t” said Daisy. “ Promise”
“ Speaking of, I have a doll house in the room I’m staying in you can live in it until I go home. I’m just here to visit my grandmother for three weeks.” Daisy said. “ Okay that would be fine but can you move my stuff in there? My mouse hole is under the grand piano.” “ that’s good, we can do that tomorrow though, grandmother will be coming home from the market any moment now so lets put you in the doll house. I will give you food every day.” Daisy said.
So together they went into Daisy’s room and put Mr. Mouse in the doll house and then Daisy went away to help her grandmother put away the groceries. The doll house was really good and just the right size for Mr. Mouse. There were two floors. On the top floor there were two bedrooms, one had a queen sized bed and a bookshelf. The other bedroom had a bunk bed, a nightstand, and a little chest with doll sized toys and on the bottom floor there was a sitting room, a kitchen with an oven that didn’t work but looked very nice in the doll house, and a little wooden doll family that Mr. Mouse guessed Daisy would remove tomorrow. That night after Daisy had given him a slice of hard boiled egg and a little thimbleful of milk for dinner Mr. Mouse fell sound asleep in the queen sized bed cozily snuggled in the patchwork quilt that had come in the dollhouse, without even noticing Daisy moving all of his things from his mouse hole into the doll house.
That morning when he woke up he found Daisy carefully taking out the wooden doll family and placing them in a basket made of straw. When she saw Mr. Mouse wake up and get out of bed. She cheerfully greeted him by saying “good morning!” And Mr. Mouse replied, “ Yes it is a very nice morning I can hear the birds singing by your window” “I have great news” Daisy said. “Grandmother told me she would take me by the creek to play today I thought you might want to come” “Yes I would but suppose I might get lost or be drowned” “Oh don’t be a scaredy cat” That word, cat, set Mr. Mouse off like fire he ran around the bedroom shouting “Cat! Cat! run before it gets you!”
“Settle down, I didn’t mean a real cat I meant don’t be scared.” Said Daisy a little loudly so she could be heard above the noise. “Oh”whispered Mr. Mouse. “ Well I guess I could go if you put me somewhere completely safe and gave me some of your picnic lunch” “Okay, deal” answered Daisy.
Daisy gave Mr. Mouse one of the doll dishes filled with oatmeal. “Here eat this you must be starving.” Crooned Daisy. And Mr. Mouse gobbled it up, he was hungry and very hungry. “well I’d better go help Grandmother help pack the picnic lunches or else she’ll be wondering were I am and find out about you because, I remember your a secret.
Later that day Daisy came to the doll house and picked Mr. Mouse “ time to go to the creek” whispered Daisy so that her grandmother couldn’t hear. But Mr. Mouse was so nervous that he could not reply let alone tell Daisy he was scared. Daisy carried Mr. Mouse out the door and onto the dirt path “now stay there and don’t say anything” Daisy whispered and stuffed him in her pocket. It was very easy for Mr. Mouse to keep quiet because even when he tried to scream all that came out was a hoarse croak because he was so nervous.
Finally, after what seemed like hours but was actually only ten minutes they were at the creek Daisy’s Grandmother went to the picnic table and started reading the paper while Daisy set Mr. Mouse into the picnic basket where the food was covered in plastic wrap which was disappointing for Mr. Mouse because he couldn’t snack on Daisy’s lunch. Daisy reminded Mr. Mouse that he could have some of her lunch when it was lunch time. Then changed into her bathing suit to go play in the creek.
Now Mr. Mouse was alone with nothing to munch on until lunch ( which was an hour away ) “I guess I will think” said Mr. Mouse. So he thought about Daisy, how he had met her, how it was a secret that she was keeping him as a pet, But then something popped into his mind. What about when Daisy go’s home? What will become of me? Mr. Mouse thought it was such an awful thought, he put the thought in the back of his head “now stay there and don’t come popping out again” he told his thought but he was not so sure that it actually would.
Mr. Mouse kept thinking about other things until it was time for lunch. Daisy dried off then took Mr. Mouse out of the picnic basket. Her Grandmother unpacked the lunches. Then Daisy started eating her lunch then she remembered her promise, she tore off a piece of her sandwich and gave it to Mr. Mouse and she also gave him one of her strawberries. As they were munching Daisy asked a question “What will you do when I go home?” “That’s what I was asking myself, I don’t know what I’ll do, go back to living my old way I guess” Said Mr. Mouse “ But I want to keep you!” moaned. “Well, we don’t need to think about that for almost three weeks so maybe just put that thought in the back of our heads until the time comes to think about it” suggested Mr. Mouse “good idea” said Daisy. By then they had finished their lunches and Daisy put Mr. Mouse back in the picnic basket, then went out to play in the creek again. In about an hour Daisy came back again and helped her Grandmother pack up to go home. Daisy carried the picnic basket during the walk and she and Mr. Mouse talked about the things that they might do before Daisy had to leave her grandmother's house. They came up with several Ideas including, decorating the doll house, convince Daisy’s grandmother to bake them cookies, and make a little book of photos of the adventures that they took. Before they knew it they were home. Daisy put Mr. Mouse in the doll house. “Here you go” Daisy said and handed him a little tiny camera “It is for taking pictures of us together.” “Daisy! Come help me put away the lunch containers!” Daisy’s grandmother called. “ Grandmother is calling me I’d better go” whispered Daisy. And she went off to help her Grandmother. Meanwhile Mr. Mouse looked through the chest of toys ( not that he wanted to play with them, after all he was an adult ) There was a tiny wooden horse on wheels and some other original toys. After Mr. Mouse finished looking through all the toys. He decided to go into the kitchen and see what Daisy had left for his afternoon snack he saw a fresh apple slice. He ate it. Then Daisy came back. She put Mr. Mouse in her hand, and then lifted him up. “I think you should eat dinner at the table with me..” said Daisy “But won’t your grandmother see me?” Mr. Mouse reasoned with Daisy. “Well Grandmother has already found out about you but it isn’t all that bad because she said I could keep you and she would treat you nicely as long as I kept you clean and gave you baths.” Said Daisy. “Well, if that’s what she said then I guess I’m fine with that” replied Mr. Mouse. That night they all ate at at the dinner table they laughed and talked and Daisy’s Grandmother got to now Mr. Mouse and Mr. Mouse got to know Daisy’s grandmother. Daisy’s grandmother said that she had a pet mouse when she was Daisy’s age His name was John. Mr. Mouse didn’t know it but John was his great uncle. It was the best time Mr. Mouse had ever had in his ten years of living ( ten years is much more to mice than to humans Mr. Mouse was an adult ) that wonderful time soon ended because even the longest things come to an end. So eventually Daisy carried Mr. Mouse of to the doll house and Mr. Mouse fell sound asleep in the doll bed.
The next morning Mr. Mouse woke up Daisy was sitting by the doll house waiting for Mr. Mouse to get out of bed so he did and Daisy said “I have two surprises for you today and then held up a small pair tan and brown checkered pants and dark red shirt made of velvet. “I thought you ought to put on clothes sometime but don’t put them on right now because I still have the other surprise, A bath!”
“A bath?” Mr. Mouse asked. “Grandmother did say I had to give you baths” said Daisy “Well, I guess” Said Mr. Mouse. “ But first here is your breakfast” Said Daisy. Mr. Mouse slowly ate up the tiny bit of bread and butter that was his breakfast Trying to have time to gain his courage before the bath. What if I drowned? What if the water is cold? Mr. Mouse thought. Daisy held out her handed Mr. Mouse climbed into it bravely. Daisy carried Mr. Mouse to the kitchen where the sink was plugged and filled with warm shallow water. Not too bad thought Mr. Mouse.
Daisy put her hand near the water. Mr. Mouse went down to the edge of Daisy’s hand and dipped his paw in. “Eeek!” Squealed Mr. Mouse. “It’s okay, if you just dive in you won’t feel anything.” Said Daisy “ I know from experience” “okay then I’ll give it a go.” Said Mr. Mouse and then jumped in. “Wow this is nice” said Mr. Mouse and then started wading around in the shallow water. “Try swimming, it’s easy you just paddle your legs and arms.” Said Daisy Mr. Mouse kicked his paws around. It took him a couple of try’s but eventually he caught on. “your a fast learner” Complimented Daisy. “Thank you” said Mr. Mouse
“It took Daisy days to learn” Said Daisy’s grandmother who was watching from the kitchen table. “Grandmother!” Exclaimed Daisy. Meanwhile Mr. Mouse was trying to swim underwater without bobbing back up to the surface. Here take this and rub it on yourself. Said Daisy’s Grandmother giving him a corner of a soap bar. Mr. Mouse took it and began to rub it on himself. Bubbles began appearing all over his fur. Soon he had used up the sliver of sop and then he dunked himself under the water to wash all the bubbles off.
Daisy picked him up out of the bath and gave him a hand towel to dry off.Mr. Mouse dried off, by now it was almost noon. And Daisy’s grandmother was making lunch. “Let’s go outside and play” said Daisy. “Okay” said Mr. Mouse. Daisy Picked up Mr. Mouse and skipped to the door before she went out she said “ I’m going outside to play with Mr. Mouse” “ okay just come in when it’s time for lunch. Replied Daisy’s Grandmother.
Outside Daisy and Mr. Mouse ran races across the yard. They were good racing partners because Daisy had long legs but wasn’t very swift and Mr. Mouse had short legs put was as quick and graceful as could be. They did this until it was time for lunch. Then Daisy went inside thinking that Mr. Mouse would come in on his own.
Daisy’s Grandmother had made PB&J’s for lunch and Daisy ate one with delight. But then Daisy’s Grandmother asked where Mr. Mouse was that was when Daisy noticed that Mr. Mouse was not there. “ We’ve got to go outside and look for him!” Said Daisy so they went outside and searched and searched. Meanwhile Mr. Mouse was looking for Daisy.
He had accidentally wandered into the neighbors yard. Thinking that the neighbors house was Daisy’s Grandmother’s house he crawled through the crack under the door into the house. He saw somebody ( who he thought was Daisy’s grandmother ) washing dishes in the kitchen. Feeling safe and welcome, he scampered across the kitchen floor but just then Mr. Mouse realized he had made a mistake because the woman turned around and started screaming, “Mouse! Mouse! Mouse in the house!” And Mr. Mouse scampered back across the kitchen and squeezed under the door. Mr. Mouse sat panting by the door. “Phew! That was a close one” panted Mr. Mouse.
Mr. Mouse wandered around the neighbors yard for a bit. “It’s no use” he said and stopped searching. “I’ll never find Daisy. Our adventures have ended.” By then it was getting dark. And Daisy and her grandmother were going in for dinner with no hope of ever finding Mr. Mouse. But that was not true, It started the next morning. Mr. Mouse had fallen asleep on the front step last night and was now well rested and Daisy of course had fell asleep soundly in the bed she was using while she visited her grandmother. The neighbor had invited them for breakfast that morning. Daisy, who was dressed in a bright dress was wearing a sad and dreary face so the bright colors in her dress hardly showed at all.
“Oh cheer up we’ll find him sometime” said Daisy’s grandmother although this was exactly the opposite of what she was thinking. Daisy did not cheer up until she and her grandmother had reached the steps of the neighbors house. Because then a exciting discovery was made. Daisy spotted him first “Mr. Mouse! We’ve been searching all over for you!” She said and picked him up. At that moment The neighbor appeared at the door. “Eek it’s that Mouse again quick throw it out!” Screamed the neighbor. “ No he is my friend and he isn’t dirty I gave him a bath yesterday.” Explained Daisy and told the neighbor all about Mr. Mouse, how they had met and other things like that. “Well hello Mr. Mouse, call me Mrs. Skye. I am sorry about the incident yesterday.” Mrs. Skye. “Well thank you, I do not know many people like you who would apologize to a mouse.” Said Mr. Mouse. And then they all went inside Mrs. Skye’s house to eat breakfast.
When everybody had finished their cinnamon roll and Mrs. Skye and Daisy’s Grandmother had had their tea. Daisy and Mr. Mouse went outside to play and Daisy’s Grandmother and Mrs. Skye went into the sitting room and talked. “What should we play?” Asked Daisy “I don’t know, what do you want to play?” Answered Mr. Mouse. “How about we go over to Grandmother’s house and try on your new clothes I got you and then after that we can come back here and I can try to weave you a cap made out of grass.
So they went to Daisy’s guest room and, after a bit of struggling, got Mr. Mouse dressed in his new clothes. The couple went outside again. “Maybe I can make a cap out grass myself. My aunt taught me how to weave. It was a long time ago but I think I can manage to weave something as small as a cap.” Said Mr. Mouse. “Okay, I think I will make a hat for me out of sticks.” Daisy said.
So there they sat weaving, two small things in a very big world. Soon after they finished their hats Daisy’s Grandmother said it was time to go home. “That’s quiet a hat you’ve got their” she said. “I made it myself. And Mr. Mouse made one to” said Daisy proudly. Daisy’s grandmother smiled then they walked home. Happy but silent. The rest of the week went pretty well, Daisy gave Mr. Mouse baths every day, they had more fun adventures and Daisy gave Mr. Mouse a couple more pair’s of clothes so Mr. Mouse didn’t have to wear dirty clothes. But then the best thing of the week ( and probably Daisy and Mr. Mouse’s lives ) happened.
It was dinnertime Daisy’s Grandmother, Daisy, and Mr. Mouse were sitting around the dinner table eating. The phone rang, Daisy’s grandmother answered it. The other two could not hear what the conversation was about but they heard what Daisy’s grandmother said. “Yes, mmhm, I’d be happy to. Yes she would love that. Daisy’s Grandmother put the phone down and then told Daisy, “ Your mother said that it would be a good experience to live here at my house. And that she would come and live here too. I also told her about Mr. Mouse yesterday. And today she said she would love to meet him.
The next week was all about arranging, the room that Daisy had stayed in would be her mom’s room and they were taking things out of the big closet so that it could be Daisy’s room. Then Daisy’s Grandmother moved the doll house into the closet so that Mr. Mouse and Daisy could be together.
The day after the three had finished organizing Daisy’s mother came. Daisy introduced Mr. Mouse to her mother and Daisy’s mother was very nice to Mr. Mouse. But not as nice as Daisy. Because, after all, They were best friends.
The End
